Vet or Wait doesn't replace your vet or an emergency visit — it helps you decide when you need one, and makes that visit easier. Spread over a typical 12-year dog life, Lifetime is about $4 a year. Sources for cost ranges are listed on our safety page. See sources →

About Vet or Wait

What exactly do I get for the price?

A web app you install on your phone in one tap, for every dog in your home, for life: the 30-second red-flag screen, the 3-minute urgency check (60+ situations), watch plans with timed re-checks, an episode diary with a one-page vet summary, the “ate something?” check (150+ items), dog profiles with breed notes, your ER card with a call script, and family and pet-sitter sharing. Plus the Be-Ready Starter Kit printables.

Is it an app, a PDF, or a course?

It's an app — a web app you add to your home screen, so it opens like any other app and works offline. The Starter Kit printables are a bonus; the app is what helps you in the moment.

Is this a diagnosis? What doesn't it do?

No. Vet or Wait helps you decide how urgent a situation is and when to see a vet: go to the ER now, see a vet within 24 hours, or watch at home with a plan. It never names a disease, never recommends medication or doses, and never tells you a vet visit isn't needed.

Is it AI?

The urgency decision is not made by AI. It comes from fixed rules built on published veterinary guidance, so the same answers always give the same result. AI only helps you describe what's happening in your own words and fills in the questions faster.

How is it different from a free symptom checker?

Free checkers answer once. Vet or Wait stays with you after the answer — timed re-checks, the exact signs that turn a watch-at-home night into an ER visit, an episode diary with a one-page vet summary, your dog's profile saved in advance, and your nearest 24/7 ER one tap away. It works offline, and we don't sell food or pharmacy.

Why not just call my vet or use a vet chat?

Please do call your vet — Vet or Wait will often tell you to. But most clinics are closed at night and won't advise without an exam, and vet chats are monthly subscriptions that depend on who's online. Vet or Wait is there instantly, every time, for a single payment — and it makes your vet visit easier with a clear summary.

What situations does it cover?

Over 60 situations across 15 areas: vomiting, diarrhea, eating and drinking, low energy, breathing, pain and mobility, shaking, seizures and collapse, eating something, belly, peeing, face, eyes and ears, injuries, heat and cold, plus special cases for puppies, seniors, pregnancy and after surgery. The full list is on the How it works page. See the full list →

Does it work for puppies and senior dogs?

Yes. Your dog's age, weight and breed are part of the profile, and puppies, seniors and small dogs get stricter thresholds — they're escalated sooner.

Does it work for cats?

Not yet. Vet or Wait is built for dogs only, because dogs and cats need different urgency rules.

Safety

What if it's an emergency right now?

Go to the nearest emergency vet and call ahead. For poisoning, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply). Our free red-flag checklist lists all 10 emergency signs. Open the red-flag checklist →

What if it says “watch at home” and my dog gets worse?

That's exactly what the watch plan is for. Each re-check asks what changed, and any worsening or new red flag escalates the answer — to a vet within 24 hours or the ER now. And you can always go to a vet sooner; your instinct counts.

Who wrote the rules?

The urgency rules are built on published guidance from the AVMA, the Merck Veterinary Manual and animal poison control centers. Independent veterinary review is in progress; we'll name our reviewers on our safety page once they've signed off. Read the safety page →

How accurate is it?

We don't publish accuracy percentages, because no tool can promise one for a situation it can't see. What we can promise is how it's built: red flags first, “not sure” treated as “yes,” stricter rules for vulnerable dogs, and escalation whenever things change.

Buying

Is there a subscription?

No. Lifetime is one payment of $49 for all the dogs in your home, and nothing ever renews. If you only need help with tonight, One episode is $19.

What does “lifetime” mean?

One payment gives you Vet or Wait for as long as we run it, with all updates and new situations included — for every dog you have now and every dog you get later. No renewals, no upgrade fees.

What's the difference between One episode and Lifetime?

One episode covers a single situation: one urgency check, a 72-hour watch plan with re-checks, the vet summary and your fridge card. Lifetime is everything, unlimited, for all your dogs, including the “ate something?” check, profiles, ER card, sharing and the full Starter Kit. If you upgrade within 30 days, your episode payment counts toward Lifetime.

What's your refund policy?

30 days, no questions asked. Email us and we refund in full.

What happens right after I pay?

You get an email with your sign-in link (no password), a 10-minute setup for your dog and your nearest ERs, and your Starter Kit printables right away.

I have more than one dog. Do I pay per dog?

No. Lifetime covers every dog in your home.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes — it's a thoughtful gift for a new puppy owner. Gift checkout is coming; for now, email us and we'll set it up.

Does it work outside the US?

The urgency checks work anywhere, but ER finder and poison-line numbers are built for the US first. Canada, the UK and Australia are next.

App & privacy

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Once installed on your phone, checks, watch plans and your ER card work offline. Maps and calls need a signal, of course.

How many devices can I use?

All of them. Sign in on your phone, your partner's phone, a tablet or a computer — everything stays in sync when you're online and keeps working when you're not.

Do I need to create an account?

Just an email. We send a sign-in link — no password to forget at 2 a.m.

Can my whole family use it?

Yes — up to 4 people share the same dogs, plans and diary, and you can give a pet sitter temporary access while you're away.

Can I show it to my vet?

Yes — that's the point of the vet summary. Show it on your phone, email the PDF, or print it. Vets get the timeline, photos, what was eaten and your dog's meds on one page.

My dog has a chronic condition. Does it still work?

Yes. Add known conditions from your vet to the profile, and Vet or Wait uses stricter thresholds. Always follow your own vet's instructions for a known condition first.

What languages is it in?

English for now. Spanish is planned.

Is my data private?

Your dog's health notes stay on your device unless you choose to share or export them — for example, with family or your vet. We never sell data. Details are in our privacy policy. Read the privacy policy →
